An Overflow of Love.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).
Devotional:
It’s easy to believe God loves us when things are going well. But what about when we fall short, make mistakes, or turn away? The Apostle Paul reminds us of the profound truth of God’s love in Romans 5:8. He didn’t wait for us to get our lives together before extending His love. He demonstrated it “while we were still sinners” by sending Christ to die for us.
This is the very heart of God’s love. It is not a response to our goodness, but an overflow of His own perfect character. We do not earn this love, nor do we deserve it. He simply gives it freely and unconditionally. Not because of who we are, but because of who He is: Love itself (1 John 4:8).
This love is not a passive emotion; it is an active, sacrificial force that changes everything. It is the power that redeems us from brokenness and transforms our lives. Just like the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son, he runs out to embrace his returning child. Likewise, God waits with open arms for us too.
When we truly grasp the depth of God’s love—that nothing can separate us from it (Romans 8:38-39)—fear is cast out. We love God because He first showed love to us. Our love for others mirrors this divine love (1 John 4:19). It is out of His abundance that our own capacity to love is born.
Reflection:
- Christ died for you while you were still a sinner. How does this truth change your view of God’s love?
- In what areas of your life have you been trying to earn God’s affection? Ask Him to fill you with a fresh revelation of His unconditional grace.
- How can you show God’s love to someone else today? Especially to someone you find difficult to love?Prayer:
- Prayer, Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us first. You proved that love through the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus. Help us to truly grasp the height, depth, and width of your love that surpasses all understanding. Fill our hearts with your perfect love. We will overcome fear. Help us love others as you have loved us. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
